Literacy lessons in Grade 4 are taught using a variety of
resources and materials from our Pearson Reading Street program which is based
on the American Common Core Standards. The Grade 4 team aims to integrate
literacy into our Units of Inquiry as much as possible to make students’
learning experiences more authentic.
To foster independence in our students and to guide them through the journey of becoming life-long learners, we use the Daily 5 program to structure our literacy lessons. This program involves independent work, group/partner work, and time for small group/individual instruction from the teacher. Activities are structured in five main categories: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. As students work independently, teachers monitor their progress and take time to meet with students individually or in small groups to focus on students’ specific needs. Teachers aim to develop key skills in the areas of: Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. Students learn best when they are engaged in activities and materials that interest them and are appropriate for their level of learning. Therefore, teachers do their best to make literacy lessons relevant, exciting, and appropriate for students’ learning needs.
We also know that one of the most important things that students can do to improve in all areas of literacy, is to read every day, so please encourage your child to read at home as much as possible.
The Grade 4 team hopes to provide literacy lessons that motivate students to become more independent learners and that push students’ literacy skills to the next level!
If you have any questions throughout the year about literacy in Grade 4 please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher!
