Math Homework: Unit 10, page 277A in the Math Journal 2. Students should be able to identify patterns in numbers and explain in English.
Week of April 12
Welcome back, Grade 4! We are now in the 4th quarter and are working our way to Grade 5. Highlights for this coming week are:
- Math: Today we began Unit 9 - Fractions, Percents, and Decimals. As this is a very challenging unit, students are encouraged to complete all homework and class work. Tonight's homework is pages 249-250 in the Math Journal 2, and to complete pages 342 and 343 by Thursday.
- Literacy: Probe testings to examine reading growth will be conducted this week. Also, students received new spelling words today.
- Unit of Inquiry: We are continuing our unit on How the World Works . Our central idea is Energy is transferable and exists in many forms. Today students started on the first formative assessment in which they were asked to describe or draw each kind of energy: chemical, sound, light, electrical, and heat. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is Bring Your Device Day. We will be using the devices later in the day when studying Literacy. Please download the following apps onto your iPad: ABC Free, Spelling Bug, & Sight Words.
Also, don't forget to study for your math test on Area, Perimeter, and adding and subtracting fractions. Be prepared!

Students received the graded Unit 7 Test test. All students must return the test by Thursday with a parent signature. Parents - please keep in mind the following:
If your child’s grade is not as high as you expected, perhaps you can discuss with your child the amount of effort that he or she put forth to learn about fractions. Prior to the unit test, students were taught the new concepts, examined examples in class, learned different strategies for finding the answers, worked in groups, worked individually, and of course, were assigned many pages of homework. In addition, students were given a Family Letter for the home, a revision packet to study from, and allowed a Review Sheet to use on the test. Finally, students were also encouraged to visit www.everydaymathonline.com, the Student Reference Book, and the many apps found on the Weebly for additional practice. Also, many students showed their understanding of adding and subtracting fractions during class lessons, however they performed poorly on the test.
Literacy:
We are reviewing parts of speech, starting with nouns. Students should complete the green sheet on identifying nouns for homework. This sheet is due tomorrow.

On Thursday, students will write the Summative Descriptive Writing Assessment (one paragraph) about one of the pictures below. Today, the students started a 5 senses pre-writing sheet to prepare for the Summative Assessment. Students are strongly encouraged to write as many details as possible (colors, shapes, size, etc.) when describing their chosen picture. Simply writing "There a lot of people in the boat" is not acceptable. Students should also use the information learned from this Unit of Inquiry, Where We Are in Place & Time, to guide them. The final writing assessment will be completed in class only.

Today we learned about Probability and Outcome in section 7.3. We discussed this concept using a deck of cards as an example. This also ties in with our lessons on fractions from last week.

We have begun Unit 7 in our Math Journal. This means that all students should bring in their Math Journal #2 from home. I do not have access to any extra books, so please work very hard at locating your book. All students should bring these in to class by Monday, February 16th.
Math: We are learning about fractions . Students were able to work with the blocks to visualize fractions. We then took a short quiz to assess how well we grasped the concept. Students also were given a worksheet to take home for additional practice on fractions of the whole.
Literacy: Students were given new spelling words today for a spelling test on Thursday. We also started the day by editing the capitalization, and punctuation in sentences. Students should look forward to more activities like this.

Unit of Inquiry: Please finish tracing and coloring your animal outline. We will finish the internal structures in class tomorrow.

Today, we practiced adding and subtracting decimals. Remember: DECIMALS ALWAYS LINE UP!! As practice, students should complete page 87 in their Math Journal for homework. Also, if your child is not scoring at least a 35 on the weekly Basic Math Facts quiz, he should be practicing the basic facts NIGHTLY - this includes addition, subtraction, (2-18), multiplication, and division.

We read an expository text called The Magician of the Sea. In addition to identifying the facts in the text, students answered comprehension questions and completed a mind map on defense mechanisms of the octopus. Students should finish any word that was not checked for homework.

Flag Day is tomorrow - Grade 4 students should wear a black shirt (t-shirt or long sleeve) to school instead of a white shirt with their uniforms. We will celebrate this national holiday by creating a large UAE flag with our grade 3's and 4's. Come dressed!

Students should complete page 74 in their math journals. Tomorrow we will finish this unit, review on Tuesday, and take the Unit 3 test on Wednesday. Try not to miss a day!

The students should also turn in their field trip permission slips, with money, TOMORROW to the assigned teacher. Please make plans for your child’s attendance at school tomorrow accordingly.

When students make a connection to the words through meaning and analysis of the words, they are more likely to learn the words (instead of memorize) and retain them in their long term memory.

Unit test on Unit 2 on Wednesday the 15th. Students will have the opportunity on Tuesday to create a Cheat Sheet for the test. The Cheat Sheet is not mandatory, but can definitely be an advantage.
Literacy
New spelling words today! Students are advised to download and print the attached practice pages for the spelling words. When students make a connection to the words through meaning and analysis of the words, they are more likely to learn the words (instead of memorize) and retain them in their long term memory.

Also, students should come to school dressed in their school uniforms. Students will be able to change into their clothing for Hajj before the celebration.
Parents are most definitely invited to the celebration tomorrow. The celebration will last from 1-2pm. Parents may also take their children home tomorrow after the celebration if they choose.

Students could use their imagination and create names for the characters. They also should recall the main events of the story in their organizer. After the spelling test tomorrow, students will use their graphic organizer to write what happened in the form of a paragraph.

Students can use the one page Cheat Sheet while completing the quiz. The Cheat Sheets should be written in the student's own hand and be no longer than one page. To the left is an image of our class-created Cheat Sheet (to be used as a guide). Suggested terms for the Cheat Sheet include: quadrangle, polygon, parallel, intersect, parallelogram, angles (right, acute, obtuse), square, rhombus, trapezoid, line segment, line, ray, vertex, concave, and convex.

Students should be in the blue playground by 7:15. We will leave for the classroom at 7:20 each morning.
Except for Tuesdays, students should be picked up in the blue playground between 2:45 and 3:00pm every day.
Tuesday dismissal is at 12:30 in the blue playground.
Lastly, please submit your contact information so that I can keep you informed of your child's progress throughout the year.
